Community (Gemeinde) 
 The religious agency that served Jews in a given German locality 
 In the course of the nineteenth century, the Gemeinde communities were given a corporate status that allowed them to tax their members and exempted them from general government taxes. In addition to religious services, many communities operated school systems and offered social services. In March 1938, the communities' recognised legal status was revoked.
